Carlingwark House named Finalists at Scottish Care Awards

Carlingwark House, a Castle Douglas care home, were finalists in three categories at Scottish Care’s 2016 Care Home Awards this weekend. The home was recognised in the Manager of the Year, Meaningful Activity and Innovative Practice categories.

Carlingwark House supports 30 people who live with dementia and age-related needs. The home also provides day care opportunities to local people.

The Scottish Care Home Awards, hosted by singer and Pop Idol winner Michelle McManus, took place on 18th November at the Hilton Hotel, Glasgow. The glittering ceremony celebrated excellence in residential care and nursing home services across Scotland.

Carlingwark House was recognised for the dedication of its management team, as well as the creativity of the activity programme it delivers.

Shirley McTeir, Home Manager of Carlingwark House in Castle Douglas, was named finalist for the Manager of the Year Award. Shirley was one of the first adopters of Playlist for Life – an initiative where people with dementia can connect to memories through music. She has also implemented an award-winning model of continence care and led her staff team to several award successes over the years.

She was joined by Activity Coordinator, Mandy Kennedy, finalist in the Meaningful Activity and Innovative Practice Awards. Mandy was commended by Scottish Care for creating exciting, person-centred activities that have enhanced the lives of people living with dementia. This year, she introduced innovative internet sessions and involved residents in creating stunning sensory gardens.

Shirley McTeir said: “I feel totally humbled, proud and privileged. For me, being a part of the lives of people we support is such a privilege. I am so thankful to work with such a passionate and dedicated team. Being recognised at the Care Home Awards is amazing!”

Mandy Kennedy, Activities Coordinator for Carlingwark, said: “It’s such a privilege to be nominated for something like this. It’s a job that I love doing, helping people we support to lead full and active lives. I’d like to thank the team, families and people we support, who have all helped develop our activity programmes with me. Being recognised at these awards is the cherry on the cake!”
