The Peele Gets Crafty for Christmas

Residents at Wythenshaw-based care home, The Peele, enjoyed a festive morning of arts, crafts and carols with pupils from Crossacres Primary Academy.

In the lead up to Christmas, 20 Year 4 pupils from Crossacres Primary Academy spent the morning making festive cards and gifts with people supported at The Peele care home. They also entertained residents and staff with a short carol service.

The Peele supports over 60 people with age related needs including dementia.

The pupils helped residents make festive cards and gifts for their loved ones, which included Christmas decorations and baubles, paper chain decorations and ornaments. Residents have proudly displayed the young people’s art work in their bedrooms and around the home.

The Peele regularly welcomes local schools to their home as part of intergenerational activities with the people they support. Earlier this year schools have performed music concerts, carried out World War II projects – reading stories and hosting Q & A sessions with residents – as well as making bonnets for Easter.

Sarah Norman, Activity Coordinator at The Peele, said: “Our residents love having young people come and visit and it’s wonderful to see how much the pupils enjoy it too. One boy helped a lady we support who is blind make a Christmas card for her niece who loves penguins. He painted a stunning penguin on the card, addressed the envelope and posted it on her behalf. She was so touched by his kindness.

Sarah continued: “Our local schools are very engaged with our home. They love visiting us and the people we support are always very excited to see them. Older people and children have a really special bond that’s just fantastic to see. I’d like to thank Crossacres Primary Academy for bringing such festive cheer to our home.”
