Two of Our Mental Health Services Race to Raise £500
Last weekend, staff and people supported at Gordon House and St Michaels in Liverpool raised over £500 by taking part in the Liverpool Spring City 5k Race.
On Saturday 6th May, 10 people from both services joined hundreds of other runners from across the city for the annual event, set in the city’s picturesque Sefton Park.
This was the first charity race for the determined fundraising team who had spent weeks preparing for the big day. Taking part in the event was a fantastic opportunity for everyone to improve their health and wellbeing, get to know each other better and build their confidence.
All the money raised will help transform St Michaels’ garden and fund a wider range of activities to help improve the health, wellbeing and experiences for people with mental health needs.
In Britain, 65% of people have experienced a mental health problem at some point in their life. This week the nation celebrates Mental Health Awareness Week, and Gordon House and St Michaels have been supporting the campaign by making sure the people they support thrive, and not just survive.
David Bruce, Home Manager for Gordon House, said: “There is still a lot of stigma surrounding people with mental health concerns. As a care service, we want to ensure the people we support lead the best lives possible and offer them opportunities to be included in society just like anyone else by taking part in events such as this.
David continues: “We had such a fantastic time on Saturday. The atmosphere and excitement was incredible and there was a brilliant sense of achievement from our staff and the people they support when we reached the finish line. We’re already planning our next challenge – this time it’ll be a 10k!”
John McCulla, who lives at Gordon House and took part in the 5k race, said: “At first I didn’t think I could do it, but I felt really good about myself when I completed it.”
