Scott Embraces Thrilling Adventures
Scott, a person supported by Community Integrated Care at our Woodlands Drive service, has recently embraced his adventurous side with the support of his dedicated team, who have assisted him to experience a series of thrill-seeking adventures across the country.
Scott is non-verbal, and his team have worked hard to really get to know him and understand his different physical cues and expressions, so that they can enable him to have choice over his support and daily life.
Committed to delivering the best lives possible every day, our Woodlands Drive team wanted to ensure that Scott’s life was full of fun and fulfilling experiences. With this in mind, they began to support him to explore different hobbies and interests, but noticed that Scott didn’t really engage or enjoy regular activities, such as swimming or cycling.
Knowing of his love of the local park’s zip line, Scott’s team decided to explore more thrilling options that would boost his self-esteem, and physical and mental wellbeing.
They researched activities and presented Scott with choices using video clips and pictures to help him pick his future adventures. Scott then selected two exhilarating adventures: a high-speed driving experience on Three Sisters circuit in Wigan, and a ride on the world’s fastest zip line in Wales.
Starting off his adventures at the Three Sisters Circuit in September, Scott experienced Speed of Sight’s unique driving program, designed for individuals with disabilities and founded by blind racing driver, Mike Newman. Supported by his fellow thrill-seeking support worker, Sharon Higgins, Scott tackled the course with confidence and a big smile.
Then in October, Scott took to the skies on the zip line, soaring over Penrhyn Quarry at speeds over 100 mph, with views of Eryri (Snowdonia). The team remarked on how much he loved the experience, especially afterwards when he watched a video of himself on the zip line, asking, “Is that me?” with excitement and laughter.
Janine Renshaw, Service Leader said: “The team at Woodlands Drive are incredible and truly embody our charity’s vision of ensuring people live the best lives possible. They showed initiative and creative in supporting Scott to find unique activities that bring him joy. If they hadn’t encouraged him with positive reinforcement, he may never have taken that first step.”
Scott’s journey demonstrates Woodlands Drive’s commitment to providing limitless opportunities for the people we support, proving that adventure has no bounds and that, with the right support, anything is possible!
