Care Homes Remember World War One

Community Integrated Care’s care homes across the country have marked the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, hosting a series of ceremonies and events to remember those who lived and fought through the conflict.

Many of our services have chosen to mark today’s special anniversary, recognising that armed service was of great importance to many of its older residents – with many serving their country, or having loved ones who made sacrifices, during times of conflict.

The events gave residents, their loved ones and staff the opportunities to come together and celebrate an important time in Britain’s history, with a sense of community spirit and camaraderie. The events were also in support of the Royal British Legion, who provided poppies for services to sell to raise funds.

Green Heys Care Home in Waterloo, Liverpool, held a Poppy Picnic – a summer celebration for the Royal British Legion – and welcomed the Mayor of Sefton, who commended the home for their contribution to the community and dedicated care. Residents enjoyed a performance of classic song and dance from the wartime era, by local group Merseyside Dance Initiative.

Pemberton Fold Care Home, in Little Hulton, Manchester, held a celebratory street party, bringing together hundreds of residents, their loved ones and members of the local community. Guests enjoyed an authentic wartime buffet, with the home serving ration staples such as jelly and blancmange.

Our commemorations continue at Winsford Grange Care Home in Cheshire, which is marking the centenary with an entire week of events. Their week of celebrations will culminate with a special visit from their local Mayor, Georgina Lewis, who will join staff and residents in planting a tree in their memorial garden in honour of those who gave their lives.

At Community Integrated Care, we wanted to celebrate and recognise their contribution, as well as that of everyone who has lived through conflict, by supporting our care homes to host special centenary events. These celebrations have been of great significance to many of our staff and residents, and we have been honoured to make them possible.”
