Runcorn Grandad Presents £3000 Cheque to St Luke’s This Friday

A 75-year-old granddad from Runcorn, who recently completed a 100-mile trek in memory of his late wife, will present a cheque for £3000 to St Luke’s Care Home on Friday 12 August. This money will fund a new sensory garden and a greater range activities for the people we support at the specialist dementia care home.

John Timms walked for six days along five canals from Birmingham to Runcorn, with his son Dave and friend Derek Gates, for an incredible fundraising feat in May. The group took on the challenge to honour the life of his spouse, Marian, on the first anniversary of her passing away. The trio were collectively 189 years old.

The home will be hosting a very special celebration event to thank John for his incredible achievement – bringing together staff, the people we support, and families for a special barbecue event.

The celebration will also officially launch the home’s new gardens, which have been developed by staff at the home, as part of a special team-building challenge which has been supported by John’s fundraising. Staff members were divided into four teams, who each created a themed garden – including a sensory fairy garden, an oriental garden and a classic English country garden.

This gardening competition will be judged by Widnes Vikings star, Gil Dudson, as well as representatives from our charity. We have a unique partnership with the Super League Club, and St Luke’s benefits from this by having fortnightly activity and reminiscence sessions, delivered by the club’s community coaches and legendary players.

Fundraising superstar, John Timms, says: “St Luke’s were absolutely brilliant in caring for my wife and I can’t speak highly enough of them. They not only cared for Marian but looked after me and all of our family. I’m just glad to be able to give a little something back.”

He continues: “I’m really touched at the effort St Luke’s has gone to with this celebration. The sensory gardens will create a stimulating and calming environment, and I know that my friends who are supported at St Luke’s will love them. I’m very excited to see what the staff have created! As a big Widnes Vikings fan, I’m also delighted that Gil Dudson will be joining our celebrations and judging the gardening competition!”

The fundraisers also raised the same amount for Halton Radio at Halton General Hospital, which Derek Gates is a Trustee of, as part of this 100 mile walk.
