Dedicated Son’s Charity Bike Ride For Amberleigh House
John McClements, whose mother lives at Amberleigh House Care Home, is hoping to raise £2000 for Amberleigh House and Alzheimer’s Society by cycling 140 miles from Liverpool to Gretna Green in just one day on Sunday 21st May.
John’s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s 10 years ago and currently lives at Amberleigh House Care Home in Fazakerley, Liverpool. The dedicated care and support that John and his family have received from the home and Alzheimer’s Society inspired him to take on this challenge of a life time.
Fifty-seven year-old John is a keen cyclist, but has never taken on a bike ride quite like this before and has spent months preparing for the big day. His rigorous training programme has seen him clock up over 3000 miles since January, and every week without fail, John has been out on his bike come rain, snow, wind or sunshine.
John will set off on his journey at 2am in Liverpool, passing through Preston and Lancaster in the early hours and reaching the Lake District in time for breakfast with a view! The second phase will be the most challenging, heading up the mountainous landscape through Ings, Keswick and Carlisle, eventually reaching Gretna Green by mid-afternoon where he will be warmly welcomed by his two sons, wife Lorna, and her parents.
Talking about his fundraising efforts, John says: “The care and support that Amberleigh House has provided my mum has been second to none and I really want to be able to give something back and honour my mum. Community Integrated Care and Alzheimer’s Society do so much good, both on a local and national level, for families affected by dementia so I hope people will dig deep and help us smash our £2000 fundraising target!”
Caroline Broughall, Service Manager for Amberleigh House, says: “All of us at Amberleigh House would like to wish John the very best of luck for his big bike ride. We really appreciate the effort he is going to, to raise money for our home which will help improve the lives of the people we support.”
