These accolades recognise the pioneering work of EachStep Blackburn Dementia Care Home and its manager, Phil Benson, as well as the tireless support of John Timms – whose wife lived at St Luke’s Care Home.
We were also proud to see our Widnes Vikings partnership and the efforts EachStep Blackley’s fundraising family members, Elaine Young and Frankie Conroy, shortlisted at the event.

Winner: Best Dementia Care Home & Best Dementia Manager
EachStep Blackburn, our pioneering £5m specialist dementia care service that opened in May 2016, along with its Manager, Phil Benson, collected top accolades – Best Care Home and Best Manager.
EachStep Blackburn has received significant national acclaim since its launch earlier this year, so we are extremely proud to see the home leading the way in excellence in dementia care, under the leadership of such an inspiring and dedicated leader.
The home was praised by judges as being “innovative and exceptional, with an absolute focus on seeing every person as more than a diagnosis of dementia”.
Phil was commended as having “strong and creative leadership” and “showing real compassion and commitment for his colleagues, families and people he supports”.

Winner: Best Relative Contribution
JohnTimms, a 76 year old Grandad from Runcorn, has been named Best Relative for his tireless advocacy work for St Luke’s Care Home, which supported his late wife, Marian.
He visits the home every week, helping the staff team and spending time with people we support. Earlier this year, John took on an inspiring fundraising challenge – walking 100 miles from Birmingham to Runcorn for the home and raising £3000.
The judges commended John for his ‘enormous contribution’ saying: “Not only has John raised a large amount of money by walking 100 miles, he has also created an inspiring garden and visits the residents for a warming chat every week.”

Finalist: Best Relative Contribution – Elaine and Frankie
Mother and daughter, Elaine and Frankie, were recognised for the amazing support they give to EachStep Blackley, the specialist dementia care home in Manchester that supported Elaine’s dad for three years. They have raised an incredible £13,000 for the care home and regularly volunteer their time.
Finalist: Dementia Care Innovation – Our Widnes Vikings Partnership
Our ambitious partnership with Super League club Widnes Vikings has seen our dementia care homes enjoying weekly visits from community coaches and legendary players. We’ve also enabled the people we support to attend games and created a fantastic Vikings-themed dementia café. It was named as one of Britain’s best dementia innovations.
