Kandy receives royal correspondence

Kandy, a person supported by Community Integrated Care’s Brook Street supported living service in Scotland, is delighted to have received a personal letter from the Head of Royal Correspondence, on behalf of Prince William, after writing a heartfelt letter about our charity’s impact on her life.

Kandy, who has a learning disability, is empowered by her support team to live independently, manage her home, pursue her hobbies and interests, and enjoy quality time with her family and beloved cat. After experiencing the positive impact of the charity’s services, she decided to write to Prince William to express her gratitude for the team who have helped her live her best life.

In her letter, Kandy explained the support she receives from Community Integrated Care, emphasising how the team at Brook Street have enabled her and others in the community with learning disabilities, to lead fulfilling, independent lives.

“I get supported to have the best life and be independent,” Kandy wrote. “Without my support team and the charity, I wouldn’t be able to do this. I wouldn’t be living my life to its full potential. I want to give the team at Brook Street the recognition they deserve.”

To Kandy’s delight, just five days later, she received a response from the Head of Royal Correspondence, expressing gratitude for her letter and passing on the Prince’s heartfelt thanks. The letter from the royal office was promptly framed and now proudly hangs in Kandy’s home.

“I was so excited and happy to have received a response from the Head of Royal Correspondence,” Kandy shared. “I didn’t know if they would respond but I was thrilled when they did, and so quickly too! Getting a reply back was really special and everyone at Brook Street was happy for me too.”

Kandy’s experience has sparked a wave of inspiration, with Kandy encouraging the team and other people supported at Brook Street to write letters of their own, including her support worker Gavin, who she is encouraging to write a letter to his favourite music artist.

“If you want to write a letter to someone influential, you can do it! Your support worker can help you,” Kandy encourages.

Kandy is now keen to inspire even more people to reach out and share their stories, showing how the support of Community Integrated Care empowers people with a learning disability, autistic people and people with mental health conditions, to live independent, fulfilling lives.
