Wayne Overcomes Fears at Baingle Brae
When Wayne first moved into our Baingle Brae Supported Living Service in Tullibody, Scotland, nine months ago, he faced significant challenges adapting to his new environment.
Because of these challenges, Wayne lacked the motivation and confidence to leave his home. However, thanks to the dedication and support of the team at Baingle Brae, and in particular his key support worker, Kerr Brown, Wayne has made incredible progress.
Wayne’s support needs require 1:1 support, and Kerr quickly built a strong, trusting relationship with Wayne, which enabled them to work together towards small, achievable milestones, to tackle some of Wayne’s anxieties head on. Starting with short trips to the shop, Wayne gradually began to open up to new experiences. This approach helped Wayne gain confidence and allowed Kerr to set new goals to continue his growth.
‘I’ve got a very good relationship with Wayne, so once that was built, a lot of our time together has been about achieving his goals to help him live his best life possible,’ Kerr explained, ‘I look for ways to get him out in the community, interacting with others. Wayne hasn’t been with us very long, but we’re seeing amazing changes already.’
When the new year arrived, Wayne expressed a dream to visit Celtic Park Football Club. Kerr saw this as an opportunity to support Wayne to face his fear of trains and suggested they take the train to the football grounds. Despite Wayne’s initial doubts, Kerr used a series of techniques to prepare Wayne, including educating him about how trains operate and showing him videos of trains in the lead-up to the trip.
On the day of the journey, Wayne was understandably anxious, but with Kerr and advanced support worker Lesley-Anne supporting him, he boarded the train. Though nervous at first, Wayne soon relaxed, and they had a fantastic time heading to Celtic Park.
‘Wayne used to spend most of his time watching TV with little motivation to do anything. Now, he’s flourishing,’ Kerr shared. ‘He’s always excited to go outside and try new things. He had a great time at Celtic Park and is already looking forward to attending a match. That’ll be the next step.’
Wayne’s journey is a testament to the power of the right support and determination. With Kerr’s guidance, Wayne is breaking down barriers and embracing a future filled with new experiences at Community Integrated Care.
